Nahum’s God: Steadfast in lovingkindness, poised to avenge.

Posted by Chris on July 28, 2008

Over time I hope to go through books of the Bible, just pulling out phrases which specifically describe God (adjectives-nouns) and His actions (verbs).  Here’s Nahum’s vision of the glory of God.

The Lord is …

  • Jealous (Nahum 1:2)
  • Avenging (Nahum 1:2)
  • Slow to anger (Nahum 1:3)
  • Good (Nahum 1:7)
  • A refuge in times of trouble (Nahum 1:7)

He acts in this world in a real way
Controlling things of nature

  • Nahum 1:3-5, “He rebukes the sea and dries it up”

Caring and Loving

  • Nahum 1:7, “He cares for those who trust in him”

Defeating, destroying and humiliating His enemies

  • Nahum 1:8, “He will pursue his foes into darkness”
  • Nahum 1:13, “I will break [the oppressors of Judah] yoke from your neck”
  • Nahum 2:13, “I will burn up your chariots… the voices of your messengers will no longer be heard”
  • Nahum 3:5-7, “I will show the nations your nakedness… pelt you with filth… make you a spectacle”

Not tolerating idolatry

  • Nahum 1:14, “I will destroy the carved images and cast idols that are in the temple of your gods”

Remembering His covenant with and promises to His people

  • Nahum 2:2, “will restore the splendor of Jacob”
